Well I've only used them once so far but here goes:
With Lidds your minimum wearband size will be about 10 models. Lidds are expensive so you're nearly always going to be outnumbered (even by dwarfs who'll outnumber you by something like 11: 10).
You want more youngbloods than Maka'ei. In a starting warbvand I'd say you'll want a hero (maxed out), 2 Maka'ei and then 6 or 7 youngbloods (I think it works out at 7, 3 of whom have bolas, all 7 with spears split into a 3, and two groups of 2).
Maka'ei can work alone or in pairs. Unless you've got 4 or 5 of them I'd recommend splitting them up so they can come from different directions. You could have a two maka killing group that would go on the rampage but you'd be putting all your eggs in one basket (all in one place on the battlefield) and with Lidds you really need to spread out and cover all areas.
Lidds seem to be a harassing force. Come at your foes from different directions to stretch them thin and divide their attention. I'll hopefuly get to use Lidds again sometime in the next month or so and then I'll be able to give you some better advice. But by then you might know them better than me

.
Whilst the rulebook recommends 400 points as the minimum warband size Chill and myself have found that 300 point games can be pretty fun (although your warband elader won't be up to much). In that case you could probably get away with 1 Maka'ei and 4-6 young.
